If you want to install ScanGear in Fedora or openSUSE, log in as root.
In Ubuntu, use the sudo command to install ScanGear.

When asked for a password in Ubuntu, enter the password of the user who is currently logged in.

1. Install ScanGear

Install ScanGear by entering the following command from the command line of a terminal software.

For Fedora 13/openSUSE 11.3

(1) Expanding the archived file and switching to the expanded directory

[root@zzz /yyy]# tar zxvf scangearmp-mx420series-1.70-x-rpm.tar.gz
[root@zzz /yyy]# cd scangearmp-mx420series-1.70-x-rpm

(2) Installing ScanGear

[root@zzz /yyy]# ./install.sh

With openSUSE 11.3, the system environment may trigger a missing dependency error, and driver installation may fail. If that hapens, install the libpng12-0 package, and execute "(2) Installing ScanGear" again.

For Ubuntu 10.10

(1) Expanding the archived file and switching to the expanded directory

[user@zzz /yyy]$ tar zxvf scangearmp-mx420series-1.70-x-deb.tar.gz
[user@zzz /yyy]$ cd scangearmp-mx420series-1.70-x-deb

(2) Installing ScanGear

[user@zzz /yyy]$ sudo ./install.sh

2. Turn on the machine (for USB connection only)

Confirm that the computer and machine are connected with a USB cable, and then turn on the machine. If the machine is already on, disconnect the cable from the machine, and then reconnect it.

If a window prompting you to add a printer is automatically displayed when you turn on or connect the machine, cancel the window to close it.
